DJ’ing with the Allen & Heath Xone K2 and Traktor Kontrol X1

I know some of you are going to say, “What, the Kontrol X1? That’s so old?”

And yes, you will be correct. It was the 1st edition of the Kontrol X1 and I still have it many years later and I still love how it works.

Mapping (s) for Allen & Heath, Xone:K2. This is a custom mapping I designed to combine 2 X1's into a single controller. Clean Traktor 3 mapping with an emphasis on the native instruments workflow and a lot of dedicated buttons/knobs for traktor functionality. Traktor Pro 3 compatible. This mapping controls 4 decks plus 4 FX units in Traktor. It uses the K2's latching layers (with all controls: knobs, encoders, faders, button matrix used in the layers).

For this DJ set I recorded a Controller view camera angle too, so you folks can see what I’m doing, or at least maybe try to figure out what I’m doing.

Why am I using 2 controllers?

For those that don’t know, the Allen & Heath Xone K2 has a build in audio card, similar to that of Native INstrument’s Kontrol Z1, however, in my opinion I feel the Allen & Heath sound quality might be superior. That’s open for debate in the comments. There’s certainly a lot more you can do with the Xone K2 though, and so when I downsized my set up I thought this would be a great option to tackle everything I needed in a controller.

I created my own mapping for the K2, which I will get into in way more detail in a future post. But for now, I’ll just say that the Xone K2, acts as my mixer, effects and for browsing through the record collection. I also use it for controlling cue points and basic deck control functions. You can pack quite a lot into this small controller.

For those that are long time readers of Traktortips you’ll know how I am a huge fan of the tactile feeling of a real turntable and this is why I brought in my Kontrol X1.

Xone K2 Traktor Mapping

I have basically created a small mapping that allows me to use the large encoder knobs as turntables. I can turn that forward or backwards similarly to a CDJ platter to speed up or slow down the track. I much prefer DJ’ing by ear than using the Sync button for my style of DJ’ing. Mixing tracks together is where I find my joy. If I sync things up, I get bored pretty quickly.

Sync is great when you mash up your own loops and have numerous things going at once, but for 2 decks and playing the way I do, it’s not necessary. You can learn more about that set up in a previous post.

Xone Dx Traktor Mapping

Use the following Traktor Stems deck mapping for your Xone K2: – Midi channel: 16
– Latching layer mode: OFF
– Volume adjust and Mute buttons for all STEMS layers – Filter adjust and ON/OFF toggle buttons
– FX ON/OFF buttons and adjust encoders for all Stems layers
– Full FX controlls for 2 FX Units
– 8 Hotcue buttons with CUE delete function – Synchronize Deck button
– Flux mode button
– Loops and track position controll
– Browser controll
– Full LED feedback and more..

To change the MIDI channel number and the Latching Layers system on your XONE:K2, you must rst enter setup mode. To enter setup mode, press and hold down the encoder button right bottom. Then power up by plugging the USB cable to your computer.

INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS

Download and unzip the included mapping le.
Open Traktor 2.9 and go to the preferences window. Click on Controller Manager. Click on “Add…>Import TSI>Import Other….” and locate “K2-stems-deck-A.tsi”. Once this is imported check the In/Out Ports for both pages of this mapping

Deck Volume Fader = M1 + E1 (E2, E3, E4)
Deck Play = M3 + M2 + E1 (E2, E3, E4)
Unit 1 FX selector = M2 + E1 (E2, E3)
Unit 2 FX selector = M2 + E4

FX Unit 1 and Unit 2 ON = M3 + E1, M3 + E2, M3 + E3, M3 + E4 and M2 + E1, M2 + E2, M2 + E3, M2 + E4

Select UP/DOWN Browser Tree = press, hold and turn- ing M3 (encoder)
Select UP/DOWN Browser List = rotating M3
Load selected to Deck A = M1 + M3

Loop Size Selector = M2 (encoder)
Move = press, hold and turning M2
Delete Hotcues = M1 + HOTCUE buttons
Analyze track = M3 + M2 + M1
